Dr. Ko & Dr. Yoon, both specialists in orthodontics, started Tri-Valley Orthodontics from the ground up.They work as a team to evaluate, diagnose & treatment plan each case to deliver comprehensive orthodontic care for each patient. We believe that two minds are greater than one! We are known for our conservative straightforward approach – and will only recommend treatment when it’s absolutely necessary to start. We believe in the importance of your child’s education & schedule appointments around school hours.
Dr. Ko was born in South Korea and moved with his family to the Bay Area where he remained to complete his Bachelors in Science and Masters degree in 1999 at the U.C. Berkeley School of Engineering. He worked as an engineer in the Bay Area for several years before deciding to pursue a career in dentistry.
Dr. Ko went on to complete his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania, and practiced as a general dentist in Pennsylvania for several years. He ultimately decided to pursue a career in orthodontics and went on to complete his specialty certification also from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. As an orthodontist, Dr. Ko has been able to utilize his background and years of experience in both general dentistry and engineering to provide his patients with uniquely comprehensive and customized orthodontic care.
Dr. Ko is married to Dr. Yoon and they both enjoy living in San Ramon. Both of their families reside nearby in Orinda and Pleasant Hill where they were raised. Dr. Ko & Yoon are passionate about supporting their local schools & community and continue to mentor students in pursuing their academic endeavors. Dr. Ko’s hobbies include nature photography, fishing, and generally being active outdoors.
Dr. Yoon received her Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the UCLA School of Dentistry(2006) and completed her Orthodontics Specialty Certificate & Masters in Oral Biology at the Loma Linda University Graduate Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics Program (2008). Her undergraduate training also began at UCLA where she majored in Molecular Cell & Developmental Biology (1998-2000), and she completed her Bachelors in Science in Biology from Pacific Union College in Angwin, CA (2002).
Dr. Yoon has been practicing orthodontics since 2006, providing orthodontic care for children, teens & adults. Dr. Yoon is also an Invisalign® Preferred Provider, and is certified for Lingual Orthodontics in both the American Orthodontics Harmony & 3-M Incognito Lingual Orthodontics Systems.
Dr. Yoon’s approach to orthodontics is conservative & focused on overall long-term dental health & wellness.
Academia & Research
Dr. Yoon was awarded the National Institute of Health Dental Student Award in 2005. She completed a research fellowship with Dr. Marian Young at the National Institute of Health (NIDCR in Bethesda, Maryland) resulting in a publication in the Bone Journal. Her publication in Gene Therapy resulted from her time working as a research associate at Sangamo Biosciences. She completed her Masters Thesis in Oral Biology on distraction osteogenesis, and during her time at UCLA Dental School she worked as a research assistant studying the treatment of maxillary deficiency with the induction of new bone. Dr. Yoon highly values continuing education and plans to continue her involvement in academia & research.
IMG_0188Dr. Yoon is a San Francisco Bay Area native. Her interest and career path in healthcare stems directly from her family upbringing. Living an active & healthy lifestyle was always a family priority growing up, often involving family runs at the Lafayette Reservoir and learning the values of a whole foods diet from her mother and father (an avid organic gardener).Her mother who is a Registered Nurse at John Muir Medical Center later earned her PhD in Eastern Medicine and Acupuncture and opened her practice in Pleasant Hill. Her father is a retired engineer and current translator for Korean Language Services. Her older sister Jane Clark is a physician in Georgia, her brother Charles is in his final year at the Loma Linda School of Pharmacy and her youngest brother David is a physician in the Bay Area.
Dr. Yoon grew up actively involved in her local community throughout the years. She served as a volunteer at the Berkeley Free Dental Clinic. She was also a longtime volunteer for the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek and was subsequently awarded the John Muir Medical Center Auxiliary Scholarship in 1998 and the Edna Hayward Scholarship in 2004 by the Mt. Diablo Medical Center. She was a violinist for the Young Artists Symphony Orchestra and the Oakland Youth Symphony Orchestra. Her family continues to be actively involved in the church & volunteer community in Pleasant Hill.

In her free time she enjoys cooking/baking, yoga, tennis, continuously learning about health/wellness, spending time outdoors, and quality time with family and friends.
